In July 2014 Wilbur the Weed took up residence in the main street of Blackwood as a constant reminder of our obligations to keep the townships weed-free.
The towns are the primary source of infestation of our surrounding forests so any work we can do here and now will save our beautiful forests.
Wilbur was conceptualised and brought to life by Blackwood and Barry’s Reef Landcare Group thanks to a community grant from the Shire of Moorabool and the generous contribution of time by local Trentham sculptor Matt Harding.
The group is very grateful to Matt whose natural inclination is to create items of great harmony and beauty. Our brief “to give young children nightmares” definitely went against the grain but Matt has managed to produce a piece which serves its purpose of public education which also has great beauty.
The council provided $3000 to the group as part of its winter 2013 community arts grant program. BBRLG provided matching funds in kind and in materials such as the trailer, trailer lock and metal.
Wilbur sits on land owned by Karen Bruno and the group thanks Karen for this kindness.
