Meet Camp and Cooper Rd junction, South Bullarto
The Holly Project is supported by an alliance of environmental groups around The Wombat -Lerderderg National Park. We liaise and coordinate
our activities with public land managers such as Parks Victoria, Deeca, Melbourne Water, Hepburn and Moorabool Shires.
Activities include holly mapping, working bees, community engagement and technical advice about holly control options.
Bullarto South community members will target a holly cluster in an area east of Camp Rd close to the headwaters of the Werribee River. Holly trees up to 4 m high will be tackled by cutting and painting.
Our working bee will include a short nature walk with Jeremy Neal, local naturalist to show some of the precious native vegetation we are trying to protect.
While we use herbicides, this work will be done by people with the necessary experience and PPE. There is plenty of work cutting and dragging holly for those who do not wish to handle herbicides.
The working bee will be cancelled in case of wet or otherwise unsuitable weather.
Registration is necessary. If you want to participate, call or text one of us:
Fred Cummings: 0425 778131 Arie Baelde: 0419 366189
Holly is particularly invasive because of the conditions in this part of the district, cool and (usually) good rainfall.
Gardens of the towns and farmhouses around the forest edge are weed sources. In your home garden, keep a look out to remove emerging holly shoots and if you have large shrubs, please consider removing them as they also form a significant fire risk.
